Aromatic polyamides are heat resistant macromolecules that generally exhibit outstanding mechanical properties and excellent thermal and oxidative stability. To extend the utilityof these high-performance materials, it has been a long desired goal to synthesize novel diamines which afford soluble andprocessable polymers [1]. Aromatic polymers that contain aryl ether or aryl sulfone linkages because of lower energy of internal rotation generally have lower glass transition temperature (Tg), greater chain flexibility, and greater tractability than their corresponding polymers without thesegroups in the repeat units. Generally, one of the successful approaches to increase the solubility and processability of polymers without sacrificing high thermal stability is theintroduction of bulky pendent groups into the polymer backbone [2]. The rigidity, symmetry and aromaticity of theimidazole ring contribute to thermal and chemical stability and enhanced mechanical properties of the resulting polymer at elevated temperatures; in addition, increase of polarizability of the nitrogen atom in imidazole ring by introducing phenyl groups, such as 2,4,6- triarylimidazole, improves the solubility of the polymer in organic solvents [3].
